Must-have Fashion for the Summer Months

Ready to rock the latest fashion trends that the equestrian world has to offer? Well you are in luck, because the Hacked Horse has worked tirelessly to compile a list of the 5 biggest trends that you should be wearing this summer. Historically, horse showing apparel has been all about formless navy show coats and blending in with the crowd. Well, prepare to break the mold, because Summer 2017 is all about standing out and making an impression!

Whether you are riding at a local schooling horse show, or competing this summer at The Colorado Horse Park these fashion trends are in style for any equestrian. Summer is a season of fun and sun so remember staying cool and comfortable in the show ring is critical, and don’t forget to slap on the SPF.

We think most equestrians would agree that the least fashionable part about riding during the summer is those pesky farmer’s tans that seem to inevitably show up. Looking for a way to stay cool while still protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays? Look no further than the FITS Sea Breeze Shirt. Not only does it reduce your body temperature by 5 degrees, but it is also the equivalent of wearing SPF 50 sunblock! Comes in a variety of colors. Get one today at Colorado Tack & Supply. Link here.

Want to dress your horse in the same show tack as the Olympians? Then you are looking to purchase an Ogilvy HalfPad. Their famous Jump MemoryFoam HaldPad is basically the equivalent of a memory foam mattress for your horse. It helps to distribute the pressure of your saddle evenly across the horses back so that virtually every saddle will fit your horse perfectly. The best part, you can customize them with color, piping and name. At $199.00 these saddle pads may seem like a hefty investment, but in fact they last for years and their covers are machine washable! Just know that when you buy an Ogilvy HalfPad you are making a purchase that your horse will thank you for later. To see the HalfPad and more of their products you can visit Ogilvy Equestrian.

Of course helmets are a must! However, the new and improved helmets are a must-have. It’s no secret that glitter, sparkle and standing out in a crowd has made a huge comeback. While several years ago reserved was the status quo, we are seeing some serious bling in the show ring. The new customizable Samshield Helmets are truly exquisite when it customs to riding style. With so many different ways to customize your helmet, you can create anything your heart desires. You can change the color of the shell or the top inlay. You can pick from 100 different colors for the trim. Additionally, you can bling it up with either 5 frontal Swarovski stones or 255 Full Swarovski stones. Can be ordered at Exceptional Equestrian.

Calling all equestrian fashionistas, Boy-O-Boy Bridleworks created a must-have addition to your equestrian style belt collection! This bright combination of heavy satin ribbon finished with a closure of the finest American bridle leather and brass or stainless steel loops is just what you need for your summer wardrobe. Choose from thousands of possible color combinations to match your barn colors, school colors or even your dog’s collar (Boy-O-Boy can make those too!). Complete your look with an elegant monogram of your choosing. Click here to order.

Jackets, jackets and more jackets! Amazing color and design are one thing, but they are also upping the ante in terms of functionality. Long past are the days of stuffy wool coats and breeches that stain. Riding coats now have beauty AND function! Tech fabrics have become a staple in our riding gear, and these show jackets show you that you can have it all. The Harcour Cella Jacket pictured here may be purchased locally from Exceptional Equestrian.

Have a great and stylish summer everyone!

USHJA Emerging Jumper Rider Program To Identify Next Generation of International Show Jumping Talent in the United States
USHJA Zone Jumper Team Championships reopen applications in light of new opportunity
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Lexington, Ky. —- May 26, 2017 —-  With the current top two Show Jumping athletes in the world, the United States continues to innovate in order to develop future Show Jumping athletes from their earliest equestrian endeavors. The United States Hunter Jumper Association is kicking off the USHJA Emerging Jumper Rider Program that will allow the United States to identify and provide education and guidance to riders competing at the 1.10m-1.35m levels, as well as to their trainers and parents.

The USHJA Emerging Jumper Rider Program uses the new USHJA Zone Jumper Team Championships, which are offered at 1.10/1.15m, 1.20/1.25m and 1.30/1.35m, to identify Jumper riders who have the skill and desire to excel in the sport, while educating these riders to become well-rounded horsemen on their path to excellence.
“The international competition environment is extremely competitive, and the United States is known for developing some of the very best Show Jumping athletes in the world,” said Larry Langer, chair of the USHJA Emerging Jumper Rider Task Force, which was responsible for developing the program. “This program will help us better identify talented riders much earlier in their riding careers. The program also serves as an opportunity to educate coaches about how their riders can advance in the sport.”
The program begins at the USHJA Zone Jumper Team Championships where every Championship competitor will be recognized as a 2017 Emerging Jumper Rider and receive a commemorative 2017 Emerging Jumper Rider pin. During a special orientation session at the Championships, riders, trainers and parents will receive comprehensive information about how riders can advance through the sport to its highest levels. These sessions will specifically discuss the Jumping Athlete Pathway, a joint USHJA-US Equestrian effort that identifies and nurtures Jumping athletes as they advance through the sport to enhance future success for Olympic and international teams representing the United States.

Key sport leaders, including the US Equestrian Youth Chef d’ Equipe DiAnn Langer, will be monitoring each set of Championships to assess talent among Championship competitors. At the conclusion of each Individual Zone Jumper Championship, USHJA will recognize all individual medalists as 2017 Gold Star Emerging Jumper Riders by awarding them an exclusive 2017 Gold Star Emerging Jumper Rider pin that can be worn at future competitions to distinguish them. At the same time, trainers of these riders will be recognized as 2017 Gold Star Jumper Coaches and will receive specialized pins that denote their title.
“Riders who come to the Championships are the best,” continued Larry Langer. “This program appropriately recognizes their achievements and puts them on the radar of sport leaders at a much earlier stage in their riding careers than has been possible.”
Gold Star Emerging Jumper Riders, regardless of age, along with their coaches and parents, will be invited to attend one of three Gold Star Clinics scheduled for the early part of the following year. The Gold Star Clinics will offer horsemanship, stable management, mounted instruction and additional education from top clinicians. Each Gold Star Clinic will offer education for Gold Star Jumper Coaches to help them understand the competition landscape and the opportunities available to their riders as they advance through the sport.
To allow for maximum participation in the first year of this exciting opportunity, the USHJA has reopened the application period and extended the 20 point minimum requirement for the USHJA Zone Jumper Team Championships in Zones 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9 and 10. USHJA will accept riders until all spots are filled or 45 days prior to their zone’s Championships, whichever occurs first. All riders who applied and met the criteria at the time of the original application closing deadline of May 1 will be invited to the Championships.
“We are pleased to reopen the application period to provide the membership with an additional opportunity to qualify for this exciting program,” said Langer.  “Especially in its first year, we believe giving people more time to apply and qualify for the championships will address challenges some areas of the country have with regard to weather and availability of competitions during the qualifying period.”
Riders interested in competing in the USHJA Zone Jumper Team Championships must submit an application and earn a minimum of 20 points in Children’s and Adult Amateur Jumper (1.10/1.15m), 1.20/1.25m Junior and Amateur Jumper, or 1.30/1.35m Junior and Amateur Jumper sections at USEF-licensed competitions. Riders are organized into as many as eight teams based on their total points earned; no more than eight teams of four for each section will be fielded by any one zone.
The Nations Cup-style format of these Championships offers riders a competitive team experience, and competitors have an opportunity to earn Zone Horse of the Year points in their respective Jumper sections. The addition of the USHJA Emerging Jumper Rider Program for 2017 will provide this year’s competitors with a tremendous opportunity to advance their international competition goals.
The Championships are scheduled as follows with the following new application deadlines:

Sport leadership will track these athletes’ accomplishments as they advance through the sport and look for opportunities to support riders’ efforts with education along the way.
USHJA extends special thanks to the USHJA Emerging Jumper Rider Task Force who led the development of this program: Larry Langer, Diane Carney, Missy Clark, David Distler, Marnye Langer, DiAnn Langer and Jimmy Torano.

Lucy Metzler 14, of Cornerstone Farm in Longmont, CO had the wonderful experience of going to her first IEA Nationals. Lucy is poised to finish her eighth grade year and had an incredible year of IEA.

Lucy is a kindhearted, humble young lady who loves to share her passion with her friends and fellow students. Lucy has been riding for several years, and participated in IEA with her Cornerstone Farm team for the first time last year, in the 2015-2016 season. During that season, Lucy felt that she had an average year, with her top ribbon being a 3rd place ribbon. However, this year she made it all the way to nationals for junior crossrails.

High School IEA Nationals

Lucy traveled to Lexington, Virginia with her Trainer, Jen Shannon, parents and grandparents. The whole trip was very quick and a slight whirlwind adventure, but a “once in a lifetime experience.” The venue, The Virginia Horse Center, is comparable to the National Western Stock Show, lots of atmosphere, vendors and attendees.

Lucy’s class had 22 other riders and she was slotted to be the last person in her class to ride. Lucy and Jen, her trainer, spent the day watching the other classes, watching warm ups and chatting about horses and trips. Finally, the crossrail class was called, and they watched the warm ups, noting horses who would be outstanding draw in a sea of lovely horses donated from local universities and colleges for the day. The stand out horse in the class was a large coal black gelding named “Bo.” They had watched him in the 2′ classes and noted his flawless automatic lead changes. Lucy was thrilled when she drew Bo for her round.

Lucy and Jen had 21 trips to watch the rounds and make their game plan. Lucy felt nervous and antsy watching the other riders, with anticipation building. Finally it was the time to mount and put her nerves to use. Lucy mounted Bo, went to do her warm up fences and then waited for her round, walking in circles, repeating her course over and over.

At the in gate, the advice Lucy’s trainer gave her was “Don’t change your riding, just keep doing what you have been, that is what has gotten you here.” Fantastic advice for a young rider, riding her biggest class yet.

The Course

Lucy had an established plan for how to stand out in this tough cross rail class. Most of the other competitors trotted across the diagonal, however, Lucy and her trainer stuck to their plan of walking the diagonal and then performing a walk to canter transition. Lucy made flawless use of Bo’s automatic lead changes, and the memory of riding them made her smile. At the end of the course there was an option fence to either circle after the competitor’s last fence, or to walk and exit. Lucy made sure to get the correct lead and then circled after her fence. Nearly before Lucy could take a breath of relief, they began announcing the placing, putting Lucy and Bo in second place.

The Experience and Future

Lucy said she felt very lucky to be able to compete at such a large venue and felt very welcomed by the other competitors and teams. She stated that she was able to chat with the champion in her class and said she was very gracious. Lucy spend Summer 2016 gaining showing experience in the medium stirrups and leasing several horses, this saddle time and hard work, she feels, put her in the position to succeed as she did this IEA season.

Next year, Lucy will enter High School and looks forward to trying the 2 foot classes. She looks forward to the challenges and opportunities that the different high school horses will bring. Look for her and her lease horse in the 2’6 classes this summer!

Lucy did have some advice for other riders, “keep going with what you do, learn from each ride you have. If you have a bad ride keep trying, there is always another chance to go back into the arena.”

Authors Note: I spoke to Lucy as she tacked up her current lease horse, watching her deft movements and her reflection about IEA was inspiring. Listening to her wisdom from her experience was very fun. Looking forward to watching her next year. If you have stories from IEA feel free to contact me at RLCaulfield@gmail.com
